I have recently expanded my consulting services to help organizations create a culture where employees thrive and that supports mental well-being. Throughout my career, I've led work focused on mental wellness as a population health topic and am now bringing that experience to help organizations better support employees and create a positive work culture. After reading more, I hope you'll reach out for an introductory call to discuss ways that I can help your organization make meaningful changes.
Mental well-being is about quality of life, resilience, and purpose. When we experience mental well-being, we can realize our own abilities, cope with common life stresses, work productively, and contribute to the community.
The way we work and the conditions in which we work impact our mental well-being in positive or negative ways. Research clearly shows that employees are more likely to experience poorer mental well-being and burnout in workplaces where there is little autonomy and job control, high demands, low levels of support from peers and supervisors, high workloads, and job insecurity. A thriving workplace culture that supports mental well-being is one where employees feel safe, trusted, valued, and engaged.
The COVID-19 pandemic has led to greater stress and increased rates of depression and anxiety among children and adults. Employees are walking away from workplaces that incentivize overwork, create unnecessary stress, and reward or allow toxic behavior. Employers that value and support mental well-being will be better positioned to retain employees, attract new talent, and create a culture where employees are productive, creative, and engaged.
Workplaces were forced to change quickly in response to the pandemic to stay financially solvent and to find new ways to provide services and products. But how have these changes impacted workplace culture? It is the right time for companies to take a critical look at how the norms, policies, and practices established over the past two years are impacting employees and look forward to the culture they want to create.
Our work together begins with an introductory call to understand your current needs and challenges, followed by an organizational self-assessment. Often, we begin with presentations, facilitated discussions, and workshops to help your company establish common language around well-being. We then develop an approach to engage employees in identifying the positive elements of workplace culture to build from and specific challenges to address. Our approach helps organizations establish a clear vision for they culture they want to create and to continually identify the "next best thing" that can be implemented to work towards that goal, using cycles of adaptive and transformative change.
